COFFEE MORNING: The Ben Rhydding Hydro

31st May 2024
10:15 am - 12:00 pm

Please note this talk will take place upstairs in the Western Gallery alongside the exhibition.

Mike Dixon will introduce you to the rigours of the ‘cold water cure’ and some of the ancillary treatments practised by Macleod through his account of ‘A day at Ben Rhydding Hydro’. Towels will not be required!

In its heyday, Ben Rhydding Hydro was one of the largest hydropathic hotels in the UK. Opened in 1844, it was at the forefront of the ‘water cure’ and the first purpose-built hydropathic establishment in England. In 1847, Dr William Macleod was brought in as a ‘new broom’. He proved to be a charismatic figure who introduced a holistic approach centred on cold water baths and showers, allied to gymnastics and wholesome food. The Hydro attracted large numbers of patients.

Tickets to attend the talk in person are £3 and may be purchased online through Eventbrite (a booking fee is payable), or in person through the Box Office when the House opens on weekends.

Tickets may be available on the door but will be subject to availability, and we cannot guarantee admission. If you cannot attend the talk in person, you can watch it later on YouTube.
