Why not scutum down to Ilkley Manor House this October to design and make your own Roman shield!
Learn about the Romans that used to live and work in the local area and how each legionary’s shield, known as a scutum, was painted in bright colours with symmetrical designs, using symbols such as lightning bolts, arrows, and eagles.
Once you’ve created your shield you can then play the part, dressing up in Roman costume. Afterwards, head outside to visit the remains of Ilkley’s very own Roman fort, found in the grounds of Ilkley Manor House.
