Heritage Open Days 2026: Everyday Stories

Step back in time and discover a fascinating chapter in the history of Ilkley Manor House, when the building was known locally as the Old Castle and parts of it were divided into cottages and homes.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2026, join us for two guided tours exploring the remains and stories of the Old Castle cottages, alongside family-friendly activities bringing the lives of their former residents to life.

A special display of photographs and artefacts in the Heritage Room will offer a glimpse into the lives of the Robinson family, who lived at 7 Castle Yard, and into everyday life at the Old Castle.

Guided tours – Saturday 12 September at 11:00am

Guided tours – Sunday 20 September at 2:00pm

Explore the ground floor and exterior of Ilkley Manor House to discover more about the cottages that once formed part of the Old Castle. The tours focus particularly on the Robinson family. Mr Robinson worked as a carter, while Mrs Robinson and her daughters ran a cyclists’ cafe and offered accommodation when cycling was becoming an increasingly popular way to explore Wharfedale.

Family activities – Saturday 12 September, 2:00-3:30pm

Children and families can explore the history of the Old Castle through creative activities. Make a model or picture of the Old Castle, discover what the Manor House looked like when it was divided into cottages, and dress up as Victorians. Free entry; no booking required for the family activities.
