Looping Through Time explores historically informed interpretations of pieces from historical manuscripts, ranging from 13th century dance tunes through 15th century chansons and 16th century consorts to Divisions on a ground from the 17th century. The music is given the lightest of modern make-overs with the aid of live looping equipment which records and plays back what happens on stage. Much of this material lends itself well to the layers and cycles that can be produced using the loop station, and most of the musical arrangements are based on the premise of “what might a person from the period when this tune was written have done with this technology, had they had the chance?”

A few self-imposed ground rules are in place: no special effects, nothing louder than the natural acoustic sounds produced by the historical instruments and every note of every show played live on the day. The emphasis is on the music’s own ability to intrigue, enlighten and entertain: When a 5 part consort piece is put together one part at a time, or a 2-part Ductia is layered up in 4 or more parts, it can bring to light elements of the interplay between parts which might otherwise pass them by. This approach both introduces period music to new audiences and gives current fans a new perspective.

Tickets £12, available online (booking fee payable),  through the Box Office or on the door (subject to availability)
