Following the great success of the resent Guitar, the Heart of Spain concert, we are delighted to announce that the distinguished flamenco guitarist Samuel Moore will return to the Manor House in 2020 to present three new concerts. Spread out throughout the year, each of Samuel’s forthcoming recitals explores a different aspect of the flamenco tradition.

Flamenco Puro

The flamenco tradition was born in Andalucía and is a unique and highly compelling artistic phenomenon. Most commonly baile (dance), cante (singing) and the toque (guitar playing) are brought together to create a flamenco performance. However, due to dramatic innovations brought about in the 20th century by performers such as Ramón Montoya and Sabicas (Agustín Castellón Campos), solo flamenco guitar concerts have evolved to become an equally compelling artistic showcase.

In this solo concert the distinguished flamenco guitarist Samuel Moore presents a diverse programme drawing on the many palos (musical forms) that shape the flamenco tradition. From the plaintive cry of laments such as soleá, to the razor-sharp attack of dance forms such as bulerías, this recital promises to be a unique exploration of the flamenco tradition and its most famous artists.

Samuel Moore’s Flamenco Puro concert will be preceded by a 40 min pre concert talk. During this event Samuel will explain to you in detail the theme of the Flamenco Puro concert programme and guide you through the lives of some of the most significant flamenco artists to have ever lived. The pre concert talk will feature both live music demonstrations and a Q&A

Further concerts, Flamenco Landscapes and Flamenco Dance, will be held on 3 July and 11 December, respectively.

Samuel Moore – Biography

Hailed as “A fantastic flamenco guitarist” (BBC Radio 3), Samuel Moore is fast establishing himself as one of the UK’s leading flamenco musicians. Since 2007 he has performed in venues across the UK, Europe and North America.

Samuel initially learnt his craft by working with the recordings of great flamenco maestros of the past and producing transcriptions of their pieces. He later became a student of the world-renowned flamenco guitarist Juan Martín. This five-year period of study was funded by Help Musicians UK and Arts Council England. Always keen to learn, Samuel has also attended master classes led by other leading flamenco artists, including the great Paco Peña.

In October 2019 Samuel released his first studio album, Guitar the Heart of Spain. Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, Guitar the Heart of Spain marked the culmination of Samuel’s unique collaboration with the classical guitarist Michael Christian Durrant. Samuel is currently preparing to record his first solo album, Flamenco Puro.

When not on tour or recording, Samuel enjoys passing on his musical knowledge through teaching. Between 2012-2017 he held the permanent teaching post of Course Leader for Flamenco Guitar Studies at the Instituto de Cervantes. Furthermore, Samuel has also been invited to lead flamenco workshops at The University of Cambridge, The University of Leeds and Newcastle University.

Amongst Samuel’s other notable achievements are the establishment and overseeing of the Leeds International Flamenco Festival between 2013-2017 and working as an orchestral transcriber for the Gil Evans Estate between 2010-2013. Also, in 2017 Samuel was commissioned to compose music for the major film Lost In London. Samuel also appeared in the film itself, performing his solo compositions in a scene featuring the Hollywood actors Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson.

Samuel plays Kevin Richards guitars and uses D’addario guitar strings.
