22nd Dec 2019 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Yule Riding : Music for the Festive Season performed by The York Waits, with Deborah Catterall, singer.
The start of Christmas was traditionally announced at the entrances to York on 21st December, St Thomas’s Day, with the reading by the Sheriffs, with the Wait’s shawm band in attendance, of the Yoole-girthol. This proclamation declared an amnesty to all nere-do-wells and unthrifty folk, and invited Twelve Days of merriment in the City.
The Waits recreate this atmosphere with Festive songs, carols and celebratory music from across medieval and renaissance England and Europe, performed on loud and quiet wind consorts, bowed and plucked strings, and the rustic bagpipes and vielle.
Tim Bayley shawm, bagpipe, curtal, crumhorn, recorder, vielle, harp, portative organ
