Over the past year we have had the pleasure of working alongside a group of young artists as part of the Ilkley Arts Scholarship Scheme. The scholarship programme offered a year long, all expenses paid, supportive experience for ten successful candidates from across Bradford.

We wanted to offer a project at the beginning to provide the students with a focus. ‘We’re Different, We’re the Same’ comes from Sesame Street and the students have all worked with this phrase in mind whilst exploring relationships, families, bodies and the natural environment.

Mentoring, teaching, inspiration and encouragement was provided by Art School Ilkley, developing the students creative skills whilst supporting them in their own practice within Art and Design, which included Drawing, Painting, Textiles, 3D, Collage and Photography.

During the sessions we encouraged the artists to take time to talk to other students, create links and influence each other’s practice. We offered technical knowledge and mentoring but encouraged them to find answers and solutions for themselves, a good grounding for any young artist.
