The West Yorkshire Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease will be hosting an Art Exhibition in the Manor House, featuring two West Yorkshire artists, Matthew Evans and Mary Johnson Green and the winners of the Art Competition, between 24th July – 3rd October 2021.

As you browse the exhibition there will be the opportunity to buy some of the artworks and learn more about Motor Neurone Disease (MND) which is life-shortening and there is no cure. Although the disease will progress, symptoms can be managed to help achieve the best possible quality of life. MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time and can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. There is currently no cure for MND, but the doctors, health and social care professionals can help manage symptoms in order to retain independence for as long as possible.

The MND Association focuses on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by MND in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Visit www.mndassociation.org

Matthew Evans

I was born in 1968 and live in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. I discovered an early flair for art, initially taking inspiration from local surroundings with a preference for buildings and landscapes. Graduating from Leicester Polytechnic BA (Hons) Graphic Design in 1989, I worked for in greeting cards for twenty one years but now work in Customer Services.

I have a lifelong love of art and photography with many favourite themes including florals, sunsets, seascapes and townscapes. I worked in the greeting card industry for 21 years developing my painting style in my spare time. My art has provided me with a wonderful hobby and I have been able to exhibit both locally, nationally and on the internet.

I am very happy to be taking part in this exhibition with fellow artist Mary Johnson-Green at the wonderful Manor House venue. I love the atmosphere of this place and look forward to finding out more about it’s history. I am particularly looking forward to highlighting the wonderful work of the competition winners for the Yorkshire Branch MNDA art competition. I hope this exhibition will both encourage these young artists and also raise awareness of the MNDA cause and how art can help to spread the word about their great work. I hope the exhibition will grow and develop throughout it’s run and I have really enjoyed getting to know Ilkley and it’s surroundings.

Mary Johnson Green

I’m a keen amateur artist, photographer and full time carer.

I have gained experience in painting  over the last  25 years by  attending many workshops and demonstrations both locally and abroad.

I paint in many media, my current favourite being oils, oil and wax mix.

The abstracted landscapes of Ilkley Moor have been done over the recent lockdown.

Over the last 15 years I have been a full time carer for my husband Chris who developed MND just as he retired.
