Roof Works: Access Information for Visitors

From early September, essential roof works will be carried out at Ilkley Manor House. This will involve scaffolding around the building for several weeks. Below is a summary of what visitors and local residents can expect, and how it may affect access to the site.

During repairs, we are open as usual.

Timeline

Date What is happening
3 Sept 2026 The existing scaffolding is removed and replaced with temporary scaffolding, to keep access safe. If there is a short gap between the two, the affected area will be cordoned off. Safe access will be in place for the weekend.
7–21 Sept 2026 The main scaffolding for the roof works is erected.
By 28 Sept 2026 Roofing work begins (a week’s allowance is built in, in case scaffold erection takes longer than planned).
By 9 Nov 2026 Target completion is expected six weeks after starting, although this is dependent upon no additional or unforeseen works being required — which is quite possible on a Grade 1 Listed Building.

Will the Manor House be open?

Yes. The Manor House will remain open at weekends throughout the works. No access into the building is required to carry out the roof works, and every effort will be made to avoid any disruption to the interior. As with any building project of this kind, this cannot be entirely guaranteed until the work is under way, and with work of this nature there is always the a small possibility of an unplanned issue affecting internal areas.

Access to Riverside Gardens and Castle Yard

The scaffolding will be fully enclosed with hoarding for safety. This will block the pedestrian route between Riverside Gardens and Castle Yard in both directions for the duration of the works. Signs will be put up by the contractor confirming that this route is closed, that the Manor House remains open at weekends. A skip will be placed on the raised area of the courtyard for the duration of the works.

We apologise for any inconvenience. If you have any questions about the works or access to the site, please get in touch.
